It truly is what molds our perception and outlook of life. Nowadays it is a heavily discussed topic within sports, business, relationships, and even education. Why? Because psychologists have discovered just how important one’s mindset is based off of multiple studies, but can I let you in on a secret? God already knew that.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”
-Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
Mindset is simply an established set of attitudes held by someone. The two most common ones that are being taught and discussed today are growth and fixed mindsets. Let’s think about those names for a second.
Growth. When I hear that word I think of new opportunities, new skills, abilities, and/or talents, more increase, new heights, greater accomplishments, and more. However, I also think about bigger risks, harder work, more effort, and pain because let’s face it, you can’t have growth without pain.
Fixed on the other hand makes me think of comfort zones, familiarity, routine, tradition, and/or staying the same. No risk to be taken, no work to be done, and no effort to be made, and most certainly no pain.
Today I challenge you to really look at those two words. Growth and fixed. What type of year do you want for yourself? Do you want your 2019 to be a year of growth or a fixed year?
I understand the fear that comes with having a growth year. It’s not easy to take risks and no matter how many times we may have gone through it, no one likes enduring pain, but that’s where the mindset kicks in. If you could only view it as your process, because that’s all it is. One part of the growth process. Yes, it’s scary. Yes, it can and will be difficult at times and yes, some things are going to hurt, BUT in the end you will find that the results are well worth it.
Choosing to have a growth year and actually making it one can be hard, but take it from me. If you don’t make the effort it will hurt you even more to look back on December 31st, 2019 and find yourself in the same exact place as you were on January 1st. Growth hurts. I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you. It absolutely sucks sometimes, and there are days where it frightens me. However, what frightens me more is the thought of me staying in the same place for so long.
I urge you to make 2019 different. I urge you to make the effort this year. I urge you to grow. Not just for your sake, but for others as well.
Check your mindset this week. Turn your can’ts into cans, won’ts into wills, or just remember to add the yet! It’s still a new year, and even if you don’t think so then guess what. Tomorrow’s a new day. So get growing, Beloved. I’m rooting for ya!
